Born 1966 in Bonn, Germany, Jan Verbeek studied Art History, Linguistics and Communication Research at Bonn University from 1987 to 1989. He was student of Fine Art at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1989 to 1996, under Nan Hoover and Nam June Paik. In 1993 he became Paik’s master student and from 1994 to 1996 worked as his assistant.
Verbeek continued his studies of audio-visual art as a postgraduate at the Academy of Media Arts, Cologne, where he received a degree with honors in 1999.
One of Verbeek’s main fields of interest is to open up new and poetic ways of perception of life, by using sophisticated interaction of image, sound and space.
Jan Verbeek’s works have been shown worldwide in numerous exhibitions, and he received several international awards. His works are part of public collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Verbeek lives and works as an independent Media Artist in Cologne, Germany and Tokyo, Japan.
