The Centro Nacional de las Artes (CENART) was founded by the Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes (CONACULTA) in November 1994. Its aim is to produce and explore new models and approaches to artistic education, research and dissemination; to promote interdisciplinary approaches to the arts; to encourage the use of new technologies in the arts; and to create spaces for the academic and artistic cooperation between institutions of different systems and levels in Mexico and abroad.

The Centro Nacional de las Artes is also a space for artistic creation and dissemination. It organizes festivals, shows and exhibits, both national and international, presenting the esthetic proposals of well-known artists. The Centro Nacional de las Artes has 22 venues, including the Aula Magna José Vasconcelos, the Teatro de las artes, the Teatro Salvador Novo, the Teatro Raúl Flores Canelo, the Foro Experimental, the Foro Antonio López Mancera, the Auditorio Blas Galindo, the Sala Luis Buñuel, the Plaza de las Artes, the Plaza de la Danza, the Plaza de la Música, the Foro de las Artes, the Galería Central, the Galería de Arte Electrónico Manuel Felguérez, green spaces, and seven multiple-use rooms.
